Scent Connoisseur: Identifying the Various Types of Perfumes

Every day people smell many different kinds of things; the scents may be in the air or on a person’s body. Oftentimes, a person has some kind of smell on her or his body and that comes from wearing perfumes. For those who love to sniff or wear perfumes need to be aware that smelling a perfume in a bottle does not mean it will smell the same on the person’s body. How a perfume smells depends on different identifiers in them and knowing the difference among them.

Perfume types can be differed by recognizing various notes, families, and concentration.

There are three note groups; top, middle, and base. The top ones are the ones that do not last long because they tend to their smells once they come into contact with the human body’s skin. They are often coupled with other kinds of perfumes. Perfumes that seem to represent the scent by their kinds are the middle notes. If one wants to have strong-smelling perfume or have one that lasts on their skin a long period of time should go for one that has a base note.

Perfume families come in two categories of different types of fragrances; primary and secondary.

  • Primary family of fragrances consist of three kinds:
  • Citrus – Fruits like orange, lime, grapefruit, mandarin, and lemon
  • Floral – Commonly use oils from jasmine or roses
  • Oriental – Has a spicy smell to it from the likes of chocolate, honey, or caramel
  • Secondary family of fragrances with four kinds:
  • Green – Mint oil is typically used; smells of leaves or grass
  • Fruity – Smells from the citrus family
  • Woody – Perfect for men; has a manly scent to it such as trees and sandalwood oil
  • Water – Man-made kind of smell made by scientists that imitate fragrances like sea breeze or waterfall.

Three different fragrances are concentrated in percentage; perfume has more than twenty percent of concentration while Eau de parfum comes in second at fifteen to twenty percent and Eau de toilette is the most lightly scented fragrance with only eight to fifteen percent of concentration.

The best way to tell the difference between perfume types is to smell coffee beans first to clear the nose before smelling each perfume for proper judgment.
